The Haudenosaunee Confederacy Chiefs Council (HCCC) has created a process, which allows developers who want to develop within their territory to be dealt with expeditiously and effectively. The process for exercising Haudenosaunee jurisdiction over their lands in the Haldimand Tract, including the area of land considered by the Haldimand Proclamation of 1784 and the Nanfan Treaty of 1701, will be known as the Haudenosaunee Development Institute (HDI).
Created in September 2007 the HDI identifies, registers and regulates development; ensures compliance with the Tseh Niyohy Dwayadowhsra Ogwahweja Wihwageh (Haudenosaunee Green Plan); and provides benefits to the Haudenosaunee.
HDI’s objectives are consistent with long standing Haudenosaunee principles regarding land use, land tenure and environmental planning. Recent efforts to translate these principles have included the HCCC policy statement referred to as the Eight Points of Jurisdiction, which was formally adopted on February 3, 2001.
